What are superfoods?

There is no food which can offer all the nourishment needed by the body to impart good health. The concept of a balanced diet is based on the inclusion of a variety of foods to provide all the nutrients. 

A proper balance of grains and millet, pulses and legumes, nuts and oilseeds, a rainbow of fruits and vegetables, dairy products and meals flavored with spices, fats and oils. So a good dietary pattern combining healthy choices from all the food group should be the basic diet pattern.
There are few foods which provides important nutrients hence they can be called a "superfood".

 1. Berries

All berries, such as strawberry, raspberry, gooseberry, mulberry are naturally sweet, high in fiber, contain vitamin C, rich in colors, high in antioxidants and impart immunity. They can be eaten plain or made into variety of snacks and desserts.


2. Fish

They are a source of good quality protein as well as omega-3 fatty acids. Salmon, tuna, mackerel, herring, trout and sardines contain the highest omega-3 content.


3. Leafy Greens

Dark green leafy vegetables are a good source of Pro vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, fiber and phytochemicals. They can be eaten as cooked vegetables or made into a variety of recipes like parathas, soup, salads, etc.


4. Nuts and Oilseeds

They includes almonds, walnuts, cashew nut, groundnut, pistachio, etc. Oilseeds like coconut, sesame, flaxseeds, etc. are also made into chutney powder are used as accompaniments to cooked veggies or salads. Nuts and oilseeds are also a good source of protein.


5. Olive Oil

It is a good source of vitamin E, polyphenols, and monosaturated fatty acids. It can be drizzled over vegetable, used as a salad  dressing. 


6. Whole Grains

Whole grains are good source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, whole grains also contain several B vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. One should always prefer products made from whole meal flour.


7. Yogurt

Both are probiotics which are good for gut health and are also a good source of calcium and protein. They can be eaten at lunch or dinner or even as a snacks. It is better to buy plain yogurt.


8. Cruciferous Vegetables

These includes broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, collard greens, kale, mustard green, radish and turnip. They are excellent source of fiber, vitamins and phytochemicals, which may protect against some types of cancer. 


9. Legumes

This includes whole legumes and pulses, rajma, black and red beans as well as soybean and peas. Legumes are excellent source of fiber, folate and protein. It can be used to make a variety of dals, sambar and preparation.


10. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are high in vitamin C and lycopene, which has been shown to reduce the risk of prostate cancer. Lycopene is better available for absorption in the body in the presence of a fat/oil.
